24V Systems Are Confusing

Trying to remotely explain and troubleshoot a 24V battery system to a mechanical engineer through texts and phonecalls is... rough.

Lots of work in Paint too.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I think he’s got it now, but this whole thing can eat a buffet of dicks.

I had the wiring right, but then someone swapped from inline fuses to midget fuses to increase reliability, but apparently put the wires back in the wrong places and made some horrible splices.

We’re talking about putting together a curriculum and doing a crash course in how to not fuck up electrical stuff so Akio doesn’t have to drive to BFE every time something doesn’t work.

I think that’ll be the name of the class.

I am a civil engineer because I don’t have a clue how electricity works . In this case I do understand how to make 12v, 24v but beyond that I’m lost.

EE life is basically black magic. Also, 24V in general is dumb and I welcome our 48V overlords.

I think 48V systems are just a scheme to make me burn down the planet.

Kinja'd!!!

Lets see how many different wiring configurations we can get to make 12, 24, 36, and 48V!

I can’t imagine its much worse than trying to explain how ratchet straps work to a frustrated wife trying to get a fridge out of her car so she can get the rear seats in so she can take her 2 kids and 3 neighbor kids to the park while the kids are trying to also talk to me on the phone.  Good times.

At least by that point we should be away from a lot of the conventional style batteries and just to a 48V pack.

Wait, is it running both 12 and 24V systems side by side? Why is there a sizable pickup at the 12V point?

Two 12v batteries in series. How can anyone even consider attempting to work on such a system without understanding that much already?

Po tential Flaming River indeed.

Why stop there? You’ve got enough cells for 96v!

What shall we weld today?

You ever tried explaining air conditioning? It’s mental gymnastics for some people.

Air conditioning is one of those things that every time it is explained to me I make a suspicious face and go “uh huh...” like I don’t believe it.  Because I don’t.

Yeah that was part of the problem.  Most of these systems run both.

Fun fact it doesn't violate the laws of thermodynamics

Why more than 4, 12v batteries?

The other 4 batteries are wired in parallel. Unless I’m mistaken, it (nearly) doubles the maximum continuous discharge rating of the batteries, while also roughly doubling runtime.
